Why You Should Move Your Site Away From Weebly

No roadmap. No updates. No future.

Why You Should Move Your Site Away From Weebly

Square Does Not Focus on Weebly

In April of 2018 Weebly was acquired by Square. As a payments processing company Square was focused on Weebly’s ecommerce functionality. In 2019 the acquired team released a new product named Square Online that directly incorporates Square’s features into an online shopping application. Since that time Weebly has been an afterthought, receiving minimal product updates.

Prior to April 2025, this article from Weebly support stated that Square will “maintain support through at least July 2025.” To many this set an expected end-of-life for Weebly. The article now says, “we have no plans to discontinue the Weebly website builder at this time” - which does not feel like a strong endorsement. It goes on to say “...we encourage new sites to be built with Square Online.” Cleary Square is not looking to grow the Weebly product.

No New Features

The link to the Weebly blog on weebly.com now points to Square’s The Bottom Line blog. Looking at Weebly’s old blog the last post was from March, 2018. Searching Square’s blog for “Weebly” shows 6 articles from after the acquisition and none of the articles mention any new functionality in the Weebly product itself.

SiteBuilderReport’s 2025 review bluntly states “Weebly is not being actively developed … it hasn’t had a new feature in over a year.”

The Product is Decaying

App Center

In 2015 Weebly launched an App Center allowing third party developers to make new functionality that integrated into Weebly. In 2020 the App Center was closed to new apps. You can still get to weebly.com/developer but the Get Started links lead to a 404 error.

Mobile apps effectively abandoned

The Android/iOS “Weebly by Square” app hasn’t seen meaningful feature updates in years, and users report the editor “no longer works”.

Weebly for Education

In 2009 Weebly launched a set of features for allowing teachers to use Weebly in classrooms. The Weebly for Education platform was shut down in 2022.

Weebly Promote

Weebly Promote is an application for building marketing emails using an editor very similar to the Weebly website editor. Promote had tight integration with Weebly features like blog and ecommerce. Promote was launched in 2016. According to these Square community posts (1, 2) Weebly Promote is being retired.

Stock Images

In 2011 Weebly integrated with Flickr to provide easy access to adding stock photography to websites. This feature was recently quietly discontinued with no replacement.

Broken Links

The footer on help.weebly.com shows three links: Weebly Blog, Inspiration Center, and Community. The first two send you back to the weebly.com homepage. As of the writing of this post the community.weebly.com has an invalid SSL certificate.

Dependencies are not updated

Weebly websites rely on jQuery 1.8.3. This version was released in 2012 and has known security vulnerabilities (1, 2, 3, 4). It’s easy to spot this ancient dependency by viewing the source code of any Weebly website. It makes you wonder about the server-side dependencies that you can’t see publicly.

Inattention to programming dependencies can lead to data breaches and outages. Weebly has experienced a data breach in the past so this worry is not theoretical.

Price Increases

According to this post on reddit lower priced plans are being phased out in favor of higher priced plans.

Why Does this Matter?

All the publicly available evidence points to Weebly being a product that is ignored by its parent company which has decided to focus on Square Online since it better integrates into its payment processing ecosystem. But Weebly remains active. If you already have a Weebly website why should you care?

The technology and usage patterns for websites are constantly changing. It used to be that ranking highly for specific keywords in Google was the most important thing. Now your content needs to be found by AI agents. It used to be that having a great looking website in desktop web browsers was what mattered. Now, for many sites, they are more likely to be viewed on mobile devices than desktop. You want to invest your energy in a platform that is keeping up with trends so that your website remains relevant.

These concrete, dated examples show a clear pattern: Square is harvesting Weebly’s remaining revenue while steering all real investment into Square Online. That’s a risky foundation for anyone who wants a future-proof website.

Are you ready to move on?

Articulation can move your Weebly site including all pages, blog posts, and products to a platform that is being actively improved.
